Angela Smith hails victory on Thames Estuary Airport
Angela Smith has claimed a success for South Essex residents’ campaign against the Mayor of London’s proposal to build an airport in the Thames estuary appears to have been successful.
Angela said, “The strength of the campaign, which involved thousands of people on both sides of the estuary, forced Conservative Leader David Cameron to go on television at the weekend and back the Labour Government’s opposition to the plans. It is clear the strength of feeling the campaign had aroused forced him to make his first public comments on the issue, and to confirm that if he is elected as Prime Minister in the future, he would not allow such an airport to be built.”
The Conservative Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who is promoting the airport has yet to respond at his party leader’s rejection of his plans.
Angela added, “Such a public rebuke from his party leader must make him think again about spending so much money on proposals that no-one else backs. This just goes to show that when residents and their elected representatives join together on important issues, we can affect national policy to the good. This is a great victory for the future of our environment here in South Essex.”
